Von Waall Highlands

The House Von Waall

Individualists at heart, this family settled within the harsher(even among Khaerum) environments and what they achieved within the difficult terrain was nothing short of amazing. In spite of hardships aplenty, their castles and forts eventually stood tall and menacing, with the land providing them natural defenses aplenty against opposition, be it in the form of steep, jag-rocked hills or thick forest canopies, perfect for ambushes. Of course, this also provides the family with less sustainability, but being a smaller populace, they never required much to live off of.

Spoiler:
The stretch towards Castle Von Waall begins in the lowlands, where a vast majority of their farms are located. Being a paranoid bunch, and perhaps for good reason, Von Waall have created many hidden caches further within the highlands, where supplies acquired from the farms, woodcutter lodges and hunting guilds were transported. In particular, one stands out among others:

Spoiler:
Fortress Danza Gretschen is the biggest of these supply caches, and the most heavily guarded of them. Bolstering an impressive garrison of Waall-loyal militia, this thus far impenetrable fortress acts as a lookout, a defensive position and as a storage. The difficult geography of the fortress was thought to make it so the slightest earthquake or siege engine would have it crumble, but the use of multiple stone layers, a supported underground complex and many watchtowers have made it a significant landmark.

Spoiler:
Spire Greshka Von Waall stands further within the mountainous terrain, and serves as a place of spirituality and rituals, but also as a further lookout and a second line of defense. Due to the nature of the land around it, it is nigh impossible to traverse towards Castle Von Waall without passing by Greshka. Housing a specific sect of Von Waall monks, the Spire is rumored to be a place of horror should an enemy of Von Waall find themselves trampling along the supposedly ''sacred'' soil.

Spoiler:
Castle Von Waall is the seat of the Von Waall family and their chosen aristocracy. The castle bolsters many defensive towers and reinforced walls to match those of Fortress Gretschen, its own garrison and the ''noble'' warriors of the Von Waall family. A place frequented very rarely by the commoners of Von Waall lands, save for when exchanges need be made, the Castle is grossly unwelcoming to outsiders. In spite of this, sounds of joy are frequent as the Von Waall family are the famous hosts of the coincidentally named Waall Blade Ballet - a festival during which the various smaller aristocracies are summoned by the House Von Waall to fighting tournaments, grand dances, feasts and knowledge exchanges, known to house artifact and exquisite aesthetic auctions. Suffice to say, these vampires are a joyous bunch solong as one does not provoke them.

Family Von Waall

The Family Von Waall are known as a very rebellious one, but given their virtue and undoubted success - one that has proven all too troublesome to eliminate. With a large claim of land, despite its lack of fertility, the Von Waall rarely make exchanges with the other houses unless in desperate need. Self-governing as they are, access to their lands is heavily restricted even among kinsmen, save for handpicked ambassadors. Any unwelcome visitors are ''property of Von Waall and will be treated as such'', which at times is feared to be a declaration of war.

The Family Von Waall itself is one of questionable tendencies. It is said that incest is present among the leading members, so as to produce the ''most worthy of offsprings''. This is oftentimes disproved by the Waall Blade Ballet, of which the winning aristocracy's heir is accepted into the Von Waall family in the way of tradition. However given their self-assured nature, it is not uncommon to think that things may well have taken a turn towards strangeness.

The Hierarchy of the Von Waall family is based around the Lord and Lordess Von Waall, who stand atop the bloodline and as such atop the minor families and their subjects as a whole. The Lord has absolute control of his land and its people and his word is obeyed without question. For good reason, as the Lord is said to be a man of immense power, who rightfully controls without equal. The Lordess is second to the Lord, her word overwritten only by him. Family members of the Von Waall are appropriately beneath their elderly and nobody else.
